A Do-It-at-Home Retreat

A Sentence Composed by St. Ignatius That Summarizes the Spiritual Exercises

“Sic Deo fide quasi rerum successum omnis a te, nihil a Deo penderet. Ita tamen iis omnem operam admove quasi tu nihil Deus solus omnia sit facturus.”

Here is a translation of this admirable formula for Christian life and action:

“Trust in God as though the entire success of your affairs depended on you and not at all on God, and at the same time give yourself completely to work as if you were not able to do anything yourself and God alone could do everything.”For a commentary on this text, see Gaston Fessard, La dialectique des Exercises Spirituels (Paris: Aubier, Editions Montaigne, 1957), 305–63.
