TRANSLATOR'S NOTE
In a footnote not cited in this English edition, Father Ravier advised his readers that he relied, for the most part, on The Jerusalem Bible for his Scriptural citations in his original work. He stated, however, that when he judged it advisable he had no qualms about using other French translations and that on occasion, rejecting all translations, he had recourse to the original Greek rendition of the New Testament. The translator has been guided by the same principle. Although he has restricted himself to the English translations of The Jerusalem Bible (1966) and The New American Bible (1970) for Scriptural citations and has, for the most part, relied on the author’s modified renditions of the standard French translations of The Spiritual Exercises by François Courel (1960) and Edouard Gueydan (1985), he has at times had recourse to the so-called versio prima of 1541, and whenever possible he has tried to fit in the English translations of Joseph Rickaby (1923) and Louis J. Puhl (1951).
After saying this, Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said:
“… Eternal life is this:
to know youKnowledge in the Biblical sense does not come from a purely intellectual process but from a living experience involving the whole person. It consists in an enlightenment of the mind and an attraction of the will, an effort on the part of the intellect and a commitment on the part of the will. When knowledge matures it becomes love.
the only true God,
and Jesus Christ,
whom you have sent.”
